Chinese Panda 30 g

China · gold · 2016-today (30 g)

Overview

The Chinese Panda is China's bullion coin, and its design changes every year: one or several pandas on the reverse, the Temple of Heaven in Beijing on the obverse. This yearly variation makes each date a recognisable coin. Since 2016 the series has used the metric format: the current coin weighs 30 g of 999 ‰ gold, that is 29.97 g of fine gold, with a diameter of 32 mm and a thickness of 2.7 mm; dates before 2016 are struck to the troy ounce, 31.103 g. This difference in weight between the two generations is the first thing to check on a Panda. Twenty-four carat gold is soft and the coin is issued sealed in its original plastic film, which is preferably left intact. At Gold & Silver Company in Dottignies, every Panda is weighed and appraised in front of the person; the assay in the agency is what counts.

Current metric format (30 g); vintages before 2016 are one troy ounce (31.103 g).

How to check it

Indicative check: weigh the coin to the centigram and measure its diameter with callipers; a deviation of more than 0.1 g or 0.2 mm from the reference values warrants an examination in the agency. The assay in the agency is what counts.
