Australian Kangaroo 1 oz
Australia · gold · 1986-today
Overview
The Australian Kangaroo is the bullion coin of the Perth Mint, struck since 1986. In its first years the series showed gold nuggets and was called the Nugget; the kangaroo then replaced them and gave the coin its usual name, the design of the animal changing with each date on the one-ounce coin, which makes a piece easy to date at a glance. The obverse carries the effigy of the British sovereign, Australia's head of state. Of 999.9 ‰ fineness (24 carat), it weighs 31.107 g for 31.103 g of fine gold, one troy ounce, and measures 32.6 mm across and 2.8 mm thick. Pure gold marks easily: the original capsule protects the surface. The series comes in fractional and in heavier sizes. At Gold & Silver Company in Dottignies, every Kangaroo is weighed and appraised in front of the person; the assay in the agency is what counts.

How to check it
Indicative check: weigh the coin to the centigram and measure its diameter with callipers; a deviation of more than 0.1 g or 0.2 mm from the reference values warrants an examination in the agency. The assay in the agency is what counts.
