Dutch 10 guilders

Netherlands · gold · 1875-1933

Overview

The Dutch 10 guilder gold coin, the gouden tientje, was struck from 1875 to 1933 by the Utrecht Mint, first with the effigy of King William III, then of Queen Wilhelmina, whose successive portraits, as a girl, a young queen and a crowned sovereign, allow a coin to be dated at a glance. The reverse carries the crowned arms of the kingdom. The coin weighs 6.729 g of 900 ‰ gold, that is 6.056 g of fine gold, with a diameter of 22.5 mm, a standard specific to the Netherlands, close to that of the Latin Monetary Union without being confused with it. Very present in Dutch families and in Flanders, it reaches the counter in varied states, from the hoarded piece to the specimen long worn as jewellery, which alters its weight; the scales decide. At Gold & Silver Company in Dottignies, every 10 guilders is weighed and appraised in front of the person; the assay in the agency is what counts.

How to check it

Indicative check: weigh the coin to the centigram and measure its diameter with callipers; a deviation of more than 0.1 g or 0.2 mm from the reference values warrants an examination in the agency. The assay in the agency is what counts.
