Gold Britannia 1 oz
United Kingdom · gold · 1987-today
Overview
The Gold Britannia is the bullion coin of the Royal Mint, struck since 1987. Its reverse carries the allegorical figure of Britain, standing helmeted with trident and shield, facing the wind; the obverse the effigy of the sovereign. Strikes before 2013 are in 916.7 ‰ gold with a gross weight of 34.05 g; since 2013 the coin is in 999.9 ‰ gold and weighs 31.104 g, both formats containing 31.103 g of fine gold, one troy ounce, with a diameter of 32.69 mm. This change of fineness is why two one-ounce Britannias may differ in weight and hue while holding the same fine gold. Recent strikes include security features: a latent image, micro-text and an animated surface. The series also exists in silver. At Gold & Silver Company in Dottignies, every Britannia is weighed and appraised in front of the person; the assay in the agency is what counts.
916.7 ‰ fineness before 2013 (34.05 g gross), 999.9 ‰ since 2013.

How to check it
Indicative check: weigh the coin to the centigram and measure its diameter with callipers; a deviation of more than 0.1 g or 0.2 mm from the reference values warrants an examination in the agency. The assay in the agency is what counts.
