Belgian 250 francs Baudouin 1976 (silver)
Belgium · silver · 1976
Overview
The Belgian 250 franc silver coin was issued in 1976 for the jubilee of King Baudouin's reign, twenty-five years after his accession to the throne. The obverse carries the profile of the king, the reverse the royal crown and the value, with legends in French or in Dutch depending on the version, both struck to the same characteristics. The coin weighs 25 g of 835 ‰ silver, that is 20.88 g of fine silver, with a diameter of 37 mm, a generous format that shows off the engraving. Issued in large numbers and widely kept as a memento, it is one of the most frequent silver coins in Belgian families, often in its original pouch; it trades by its fine silver weight, the state of preservation making no difference. At Gold & Silver Company in Dottignies, every Baudouin 250 francs is weighed and appraised in front of the person, like the gold coins; the assay in the agency is what counts.

How to check it
Indicative check: weigh the coin to the centigram and measure its diameter with callipers; a deviation of more than 0.1 g or 0.2 mm from the reference values warrants an examination in the agency. The assay in the agency is what counts.
